Some commonly used web terms are explained
on the column on the right. Below is an indication
of likely costs (UK websites).
Design
of your Website : Costs for designing and developing
your website vary from a few hundred pounds to many
thousands of pounds. If you are a small to medium
sized business, it makes sense to start with a small
site, and add to it over time. We are currently
offering a 5-page site for £550. Click
here for details.
Hosting
: Hosting charges vary but so does what your get
for your money. Many ISPs offer free or very cheap
hosting. But this is the DIY end of the market.
You are provided with a Control Panel allowing you
to set up and maintain your site. This can work
well if you have the knowledge, time and inclination
to do this. The downside can be sorting out problems
if they arise. Many of these organisations will have
few staff, and often all communication is by email
only.
With thousands of sites online problems can take
a while to resolve. If you want good quality, fast
and reliable, trouble-free hosting we recommend
that you pay a little more.
Search
engine submission : Without search engine submission,
coupled with website optimisation, your site will
receive very few hits or visits and you will have
wasted your money. Registering it with a selection
of the major search engines is therefore essential.

engines, click here.
Search
engine optimisation : With so much information
on the internet, search engines must decide which
are the most relevant sites and present these to
visitors first. Complex algorithms are used, but
essentially they all look at the text on the site,
the keywords, site description and titles ('meta'
tags not visible to the site visitor), headings,
domain name etc. A site must be carefully built
with quality content and good use of these components
to stand a chance of achieving visits from keyword
searches. Search engine optimisation cost is
highly variable ranging to several hundred pounds
a month for larger commercial sites.

Host
and Hosting : A website must be
stored on a 'server' or computer that
is permanently online so that visitors can access your site.
The organisation owning the server is
your host.
URL
: Uniform Resource Locator. All requests
made to a web server need to request
something. A URL represents an object
on your server, that is accessible to
the remote user.
Domain
Name : the URL for your site. Domain
names usually have the form www.anything
with the suffix .co.uk or .com or .org.
ISP
: Internet Service Provider. This is
the company that gives you access to
the internet.
Search
Engine : A website that has a massive
index of internet sites enabling users
to search for the type of site they
are looking for.
Visit
: A visit is when some remote user makes
a request for a page from your site
for the first time.
Hit
: Hits are requests for pages or elements
of pages on your site. There are always
many more hits than visits and one visit
can result in many requests for pages
or parts of pages as the visitor browses
your site.
Site
Ranking : It is not enough for your
site to be submitted to a search engine.
With so much information on the internet,
Search Engines 'rank' sites according
to certain criterian they hold.
